چکیده

This paper considers the welfare consequences of two particularly simple rules for monetary policy: an interest rate peg and a money growth peg. The model economy consists of a real side that is the standard real business cycle model, and a monetary side that amounts to imposing cash-in-advance constraints on certain market transactions. The paper also considers the effect of assuming a rigidity in the typical household's cash savings choice. The competitive equilibrium of the economy is not Pareto efficient, partly because of two intertemporal distortions: a distortion on the capital accumulation decision, and a distortion on portfolio choice that arises from the assumed rigidity. The principal result of the paper is that the interest rate rule (but not the money growth rule) entirely eliminates these two intertemporal distortions and is thus the benevolent central banker' s policy choice. clevelandfed.org/research/workpaper/1995/wp9504 clevelandfed.org/research/workpaper/1995/wp9504

Money Growth Rules in an Emerging Small Open Economy with an informal sector

This paper is concerned with the saddle-path stability of monetary growth rules in a two-country two-sector dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model. Alongside standard features of emerging economies, such as a combination of producer and local currency pricing for exports, fiscal dominance and oil exports, this model also incorporates informal labour and production sectors and examines how...

Ination taxes and ination subsidies: Explaining the twisted relationship between ination and output

Monetary and Macro-prudential Policies: An Integrated Analysis

This paper studies the interaction between monetary and macro-prudential policies in a simple model with both nominal and financial frictions. The nominal friction gives rise to a conventional monetary policy objective emphasized in the New Keynesian literature. The financial friction, in the form of an occasionally binding collateral constraint, gives rise to a financial stability objective. ...

Optimal Monetary Policy Regime Switches∗

Given structural shifts in the economy, optimal simple monetary policy rules may respond with switches in their policy parameters. When the growth rate, inter-temporal preferences, or volatilities switch, the monetary authority chooses regime-dependent policy parameters to maximize welfare. These optimized policy parameters may differ across regimes and from the optimal choice of parameters for...

Indeterminacy with constant money growth rules and income-based liquidity constraints

We study the implications of constant money growth rules on the stability properties of the equilibrium, in economies where agents are subject to a partial cash-in-advance constraint applying simultaneously to consumption and investment purchases. By reference to similar models in which the liquidity constraint applies only to consumption, we show that the inclusion of investment has dramatic, ...
